It's Kind of A Funny Story is about a sixteen year old boy who is on the brink of a chaotic break. The generally summary of this story starring Zach Galifianakis ( Hangover, Hangover 2) with Emma Roberts (We Are the Millers, Scream 4, Nancy Drew) is that Craig, a sixteen year old average kid has come to terms that he wants to kill himself. Coming from New York, he attends a prestigious that will soar any individual to any college they want to if they perform well, with this he has pressuring parents that want to him be able to go to any college he wants and push him as far as they can. In doing so, this has resulted in Craig (played by Keir Gilchrist) becoming overwhelmed with everything that is going on in his life and wants to end it all. As he is making his way to the Brooklyn Bridge, he starts to think about his family and how his death would affect them, and his little sister, his friends, other kids at school etc. With these thoughts, he starts to have doubts and decides instead he would find a quick fix and some meds to make him happy again so in response he checks himself into an emergency room requesting that they give him some sort of meds and wishes to be admitted to be looked at. The reluctant doctor agrees and decides to admit him. Upon being admitted Craig doesn't realize the severity of saying that you want to end your life and is stuck for five days in a mental institution for evaluation. During his stay there he meets many people such as Bobby (played by Zach Galifinakis) a secretive individual who conceals why he is there, but helps other people through there problems as well as he can. Being in a mental hospital, only being sixteen, there are also other teenagers there who also has troubling issues just like Craig. One of these teenagers is named Noelle (played by Emma Roberts) also a suicide risk, has cuts along her arms and on her face. So with both of them being there, both of them are able to help each other through there problems inside the hospital together.
This film shows both sides of being in a mental hospital and a chance for Craig to realize what he has and what other people don't. Checking himself into the hospital gave him the chance to appreciate what he has, and what he personally has achieved, and learned to let go of what his parents think and how to stand up for himself and find the things that he wants to do.With two strong seasoned co-stars, Roberts, and Galifianakis, it looks like a good solid film. With the amazing comedy by Zach Galifianakis, and an already strong actress with multiple films under her belt, Roberts is able to show more of what she can do expanding her range as an actress.
Its a feel-good film that will make you smile more than once in a unique situation will leave you appreciating what you have and how much other people can and are struggling. All in all I give this film 4/5. The ending left some open holes to the story, but still brought it around and closed most of them.
